Regional Training Session. Cohort 12. Mongolia - 2007

 

The Field Session of Cohort 12 LEAD CIS devoted to Nikita Glazovsky took place in Mongolia from 28.08.2007 to 03.09.2007 with the support of Mongolian Embassy in Moscow and Mongolia-Russia Friendship society and with the great personal help of Mr. Petr Ivanov (Cohort 2 LEAD CIS fellow). The session was dedicated to the general problems of climate change and sustainable development of Mongolia. During the session associates visited Mongolian capital Ulan-Bator, aymak center Bulgan, Erdenet and mining company, somon center Hor-Horin and the Natural Reserve at Ogii-Nuur lake.

The event of great importance for associates was the meeting with the Member of the State Great Hural of Mongolia, former Prime Minister of the country Mr. R. Amarjargal. Mr. Amarjargal gave a talk on sustainable development of Mongolia which introduced to participants common vision of the current situation in the country.

Another important event was the visit to affiliated branch of the famous Russian Academy of Economics located in Ulan-Bator. This branch is giving high education not only to Mongolian students but to the young people from Russia and other CIS countries as well. The associates met professor Popov - the Head of the Branch who spoke with them about the problems and perspectives of High Education in Mongolia. It was reached an agreement on the cooperation and involving of Mongolian participants in the LEAD CIS program.

At the Academy associates attended the lecture on Global Warming and Livestock Sector in Mongolia by the former Director of Mongolian Meteorology Center Mr. L. Natsagdorj.

The participants also visited the 'GOBI' manufactory that is an example of modern Mongolian high-tech production', where they were given the opportunity to see all the steps of cashmere manufacturing from cutted wool to the ready thing under the supervision and with the comments of Deputy Director of the factory Mr. N. Jargalsaykhan.

At Erdenet the copper and molybdenum ore mining and processing enterprise, open-pit mine "Erdenet", which produces over 1,5% of world intake of copper was introduced to 12 Cohort. The “Erdenet” is producing 500000 tons of copper concentrate per year. The meeting with the Deputy Director on social problems took place. The agreement of joint environmental project processing has been achieved.

The associates were deeply impressed by the Ogii Lake Ecosystem Conservation Project the principal goal of which is to promote community based conservation and wise use of wetland ecosystem. Ogii Lake wetland is protected from April 2006 as the internationally important wetland for waterfowl under the Ramsar Convention. The area contains 266 species of plants, 20 species of mammals, 129 species of birds and 15 species of fish.
In total the associates covered over 1000 km in wild steppe. 12 Cohort also visited a famous place of tourist attraction, ancient Chingishan capital Har-Horin and the museum of Natural History at Ulan-Bator with outstanding collection of fossils.

The main output of the session is common vision of Mongolia as rapidly developing country with the great potential to be the one of the most important neighbor of the CIS region. A lot of problems will face Mongolia on this way but all of them could be overcame by unity of Mongolian people.
